New pay machines for Blue Badge holders have been installed at Grantham hospital.
Blue Badge disabled drivers will be charged £1.50 a day to park at the hospital and others in the county run by the United Lincolnshire Hospital’s NHS Trust. The cost of parking at Grantham Hospital for other visitors was increased earlier this year.
A spokesman for the Trust said: “In September 2009, we committed to not increase car parking charges for three years, which expired in September 2012. The Trust hasn’t put up the price in five years.
“Recently we introduced 11 new car parking machines across the Trust. The prices will come into operation once the machines are fully up and running. The machines cost £27,884 and the Trust will more than recover this cost within the first year of the new charges coming into effect. The Trust income from car parks is reinvested directly into providing the car parking facilities including maintenance and security, barriers and ticket machines, community charges, administration for car parks, capital investments, rates, lighting, and CCTV.
“We try to keep our charges as low as possible at all times. However the Trust has financial challenges and the cost for us to provide car parks increases every year. We have had to make the difficult choice to increase these charges rather than reducing services closer to direct patient care.”
