Bronze for Grantham College Vincent in prestigious awards
A Grantham College student has won an award in the Student Starpack awards.
Vincent Las Marias, a year 2 level 3 extended diploma in art and design student, won a bronze award.
He chose the category ‘Grow your own culinary herb kit’, where the design challenge was to create a carton board kit that contained everything you would need to grow herbs in your home.
The pack had to hold packs of seeds, pots, compost and growing instructions, as well as maximizing the use of carton board and consider how the outer pack could be re-used, how the plants would be grown and then displayed and used once grown.
His design stacked three compartments on top of each other, which would each hold a herb with an oriental theme and bold lettering. The judges commented: “A strong theme throughout the project and bold constructive design which could be re-used. Boards contain a good level of detail.”
Vincent will receive his award at the Starpack Awards presentations at National Space Centre in Leicester on Thursday, September 10. The presentations will include a speech on sustainable packaging and the circular economy by Prof. Rob Holdway FRSA, director at Giraffe Innovation Ltd.
The Starpack Industry Awards scheme is now in its 57th year and is the UK’s premier annual awards scheme recognising innovation in packaging design and technology. Starpack also includes award schemes for students of packaging design-related courses and for school pupils in Years 10, 11 and AS Level.
This year’s competition received 148 entries with the judges awarding 14 commended, 25 bronze, 22 silver and 15 gold stars along with additional sponsored award prizes.
