A new dog training business has launched in Colsterworth which is demonstrating to owners the benefits of positive reinforcement.

‘Build a Bond’ has been set up by Adrian Rybicki and Michala Banks, who both believe that remaining positive is the key to ensuring dogs are happy and well-behaved.

Adrian explains: “We offer fun, friendly obedience training that is all about positive reinforcement, which helps animals relax. If you are negative they tense up and the behaviour becomes worse.”

Both Adrian and Michala know this not only from their experience as long-time dog owners but also through gaining qualifications in animal management.

Consequently they have decided to start their own obedience classes at Colsterworth village hall, where they don’t use any punishment based methods but instead focus on reward techniques.

Their sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings cater for both puppies and older dogs, with a five-week mixed ability puppy training course that will teach owners how to train some essential skills such as recall, lead work and socialising with other dogs, all in fun, innovative ways. There is also a five-week adult course going through these same key skills in greater depth.

Adrian added: “We do not force anything upon the dogs during training sessions – we use free shaping, lure and reward techniques to help build upon the essential bond between dog and owner.”

There are no age or breed restrictions except illegal breeds, and owners can come for single sessions costing £8 each, or £35 for a five week block. In addition to the group classes, one-to-one training sessions and behaviour modification programmes are available.

Booking is required and can be done by emailing adrian@build-a-bond.co.uk or by phoning 07518 615454.
