The district council has started consulting with traders, businesses and the public to see how it can increase custom at Grantham market.

South Kesteven District Council says its consultation will last until Sunday, October 4, and will ask each party why they use the market and what factors they feel will help see it progress and increase the numbers it attracts.

Shoppers, residents and visitors to the market can submit their views at www.surveymonkey.com

Slightly amended versions of the consultation will be made available to traders, businesses and organisations to ask more specific questions relating to their trade and gauge the views of each group.

The current market format, which sees stalls condensed into an area on narrow Westgate and in the Market Place, will continue until further notice.

SKDC’s Venues and Facilities manager Paul Stokes said: “We are mindful traders and businesses want a permanent solution in place for the market’s layout. Given the relative success of the latest trial option we are going to continue with it until further notice whilst now consulting on the wider issues over developing the market.

“This full consultation is a real opportunity for all parties with an interest in the future of the market to state their views as to how they want it to progress.

“Once the consultation has finished the permanent layout will be announced together with the consultation’s findings.”

The council has experimented in recent months with market layouts in Wide Westgate and Narrow Westgate, but stallhoders have told the Journal they want a quick solution because customers are getting frustrated with stalls being moved about.

Traders, businesses organisations and the public are still welcome to give feedback on the market’s current format until the end of the consultation by emailing markets@southkesteven.gov.uk
