WORK on Grantham Market Place began this week leading to the closure of the area to traffic – but the Saturday market will still go ahead as normal tomorrow.

During the first 10 weeks of the work the market stalls will be moved further along Westgate. All of the shops in the area will still have pedestrian access.

After the first phase is completed, work will begin on Narrow Westgate. At this stage the market stalls will have the choice of returning to the newly revamped Market Place or staying in Westgate.

Market and events supervisor for South Kesteven District Council Miki Gregory said: “The traders are concerned that they are going to move and potentially lose customers but they are all positive about the whole improvement. They see it as a benefit to them.”

When the work is complete there are plans to look at the best way to set out the stalls and re-launch the market.

Team leader for leisure and amenities at the council, Susie McCahon, said: “We are doing everything we can to make sure regular customers know where to find the stalls.”
