Marks and Spencer says it is still aiming to open its new Simply Food store on London Road before Christmas.
A source had told the Journal they understood that M&S would not be able to open the store in time for the Christmas holidays, but this has been denied by the company.
A spokesman for M&S told the Journal that it will be able to confirm a date in a few weeks’ time. She said there was “nothing to suggest the store will be opening after Christmas. There is no truth in it. We are still hoping to open before Christmas.”
The company is opening a 1,394sq metre food store in the former Curry’s premises, creating about 50 new full and part-time jobs, with a cafe and space for non-food goods in the store.
The retailer left the town in 2010, having occupied an 800sq metre clothing and food unit in the High Street.
