A VILLAGE pub has won a prestigious award recognising it as the best place to eat in the county.

The Chequers at Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir has won the Good Pub Guide’s Lincolnshire Dining Pub of the Year for 2012.

It is the first time the pub, long admired in the Vale, has achieved the distinction - knocking The George at Stamford off top spot.

Jo Chad, of The Chequers said: “The George at Stamford has held the top spot for the past six or seven years so we are really pleased we have managed to finally knock them off and get the recognition I think we deserve.”

Jo has been running The Chequers for the past nine years and the reputation of the food has increased year-on-year. She also owns The Gregory at Harlaxton, The Welby Arms at Denton and The Lord Nelson at Winthorpe.

Jo said: “We have steadily grown the business every year - even through the recession.

“I think the key to our success is consistency. Our head chef has been with us for four years and we have a very low staff turnover while offering value for money.”

The Good Pub Guide praised The Chequers for its “interesting food at a comfortably relaxed inn with good drinks and appealing castle views from outside tables”.
