Four friends from Caythorpe are preparing to embark on a 3,000 mile round road trip to Benidorm in aid of Lincolnshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group next week.

As if this was not enough of a challenge for brothers Mark and Dale Woodward and their friends Lee Ash and Mark Wingad, they will be driving a car costing only £250, painted in the red and yellow of McDonald’s and all dressed as Ronald McDonald.

It is part of the annual Benidorm or Bust rally in which hundreds of teams raise sponsorship money for local charities by attempting to travel the 1500 miles from Blackpool to Benidorm in cars costing no more than a few hundred pounds.

However by starting from their home village instead and also driving back from Benidorm, the team from Caythorpe will actually be clocking up nearly 3,000 miles.

Mark Woodward, 40, said: “It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but we’re going to take it in turns to drive and hopefully the car will make it there and back.”

They have chosen to raise money for Lincolnshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group having seen how it has helped friends living in Caythorpe whose children have Down’s Syndrome.

After setting off on April 30, Mark and his teammates will join the rest of the charity drivers on M25, who they will also be competing against for the titles of best car, best costumes and spirit of the event.

“We don’t think anyone else has dressed up as Ronald McDonald before, so we should stand out,” added Mark.

They have been assisted in transforming their silver Peugeot 406 into an eye-catching red and yellow clown car by local businesses, with Joe 0’Tools Bodywork providing the paintwork and Steve Oxtoby of Signs Express adding logos and graphics free of charge.

Mark said: “We’re really grateful for all the help we’ve had in getting the car ready, and for all the support on Facebook and from friends and family.”

The team have created the Facebook group ‘Benidorm McThorpe on Tour’ which you can follow to receive daily updates of their journey from April 30 to May 7.
