Celebrations at ‘outstanding’ Grantham church school
Pupils and staff at The National Junior School in Grantham have been celebrating following an ‘outstanding’ Church Schools’ inspection.
The National School has been found to be an ‘outstanding’ church school following a National Society Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools in June.
“We are delighted that once again The National School has been found to be an outstanding church school,” said Kay Sutherland, headteacher. “We are so pleased that our work and our relationship across our school community has been found to be exemplary and the school a warm and welcoming place for everyone.”
The inspector visited the school on June 10, when the pupils were celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday. As part of the celebrations the inspector joined the school for worship in St Wulfram’s and joined in an unexpected picnic for the whole school, which was held in the church at lunch time.
Following the visit, the inspector noted three key areas of the school that were found ‘outstanding’, including that the ‘explicitly distinctive Christian values are deeply embedded in the daily life of the school so that all children are nurtured to ‘be their best’ as children loved by God.’
‘A highly supportive board of trustees provide practical support and appropriate challenge ensuring that the school is continually developing its Christian distinctiveness.’
Along with ‘strong links with the local church and the wider community enrich the spiritual life of the whole school community.’
The report described the school as a ‘diverse and inclusive church school community where Christian values are deeply embedded in the daily life of the school.’
Mrs Sutherland said: “Our strong Christian ethos of our day to day life shone through with the inspector finding a strong culture of nurture built into all our structures which ensures that all pupils achieve their potential and the school’s Christian character clearly defines the approach to regular pupil progress meetings which identifies the progress of all learners.”
The report noted only one are of improvement to ‘develop and embed new approaches to assessing learning in religious education (RE) so that pupil progress is effectively monitored.’
The school, which became an academy in July 2012 in partnership with Harrowby Infant School, serves a diverse community and head teacher, Mrs Sutherland is confident that the school will continue to make the school a welcoming place.
“Parents say their children feel ‘happy and safe’ in our school and are able to gain confidence,” she said. “We don’t turn anyone away no matter what they believe.”
