A local children’s author who wants to increase youngsters’ engagement with books, is launching a competition to create a character in her published series of animal stories.
Sarah Hindmarsh has had two Animal Adventure books published so far, with tales suitable for children as young as five.
Taking inspiration from the actual lunar activities of southern grasshopper mice, her first book ‘The Mouse who Howled at the Moon’ was published last August.
“Animal stories have always been popular, but I wanted to write about an animal not many people will have heard of,” said Sarah, whose knowledge of all creatures great and small has much to do with her degree in animal health.
In November she quickly followed her debut with the story of a more familiar, but no less adventurous mammal, in ‘The Squirrel Who Travelled the World’, with the third book in the series ‘The Squirrel Who Adventured With Otters’ already in the pipeline.
Now Sarah is encouraging children aged 12 and under to create an animal character they would like to see within the series, in a competition that will see the winning child receive a signed copy of the book with a special dedication to them in the front.
It is all part of her aim to get children more engaged with books and storytelling, a topic she regular blogs about on her website Creating With Kohla, named after her miniature poodle.
Sarah who is a member of Grantham Writers also recently worked with Barrowby Scouts to help them earn their writing badge, and moreover has helped them compile an anthology of their poems and short stories which she plans to make available on Kindle.
If this and her day job as a car sales administrator wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Sarah is also writing a series of fantasy novels full of quests and magical beasts for older children.
Entrants for the Animal Adventures competition can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org up to March 31, 2015, with full terms and conditions at Sarah’s website www.creatingwithkohla.com
