Charities and good causes in South Kesteven can now sign up to benefit from the district’s new local lottery, LotterySK, which is due to launch in September.

The www.lotterysk.co.uk website is now live for charities, voluntary organisations and other good causes to register to benefit from the new weekly online lottery in which players can win prizes of up to £25,000.

From each £1 ticket, 60 pence will go to local charities, voluntary organisations and other good causes that work in South Kesteven – more than twice the proportion raised by the National Lottery.

When a participant chooses one of the registered charities or good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central ‘Community Fund’. If no charity is chosen, all 60p goes to the fund.

More than 40 charities from Grantham, Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings and other villages attended a launch at the Jubilee Church Life Centre, London Road, Grantham today (Tuesday, July 24) to find out more about the lottery and how they can take part.

LotterySK tickets will go on sale from Tuesday, September 18. The first lottery draw will be on Saturday, October 27.

One of the first charity’s to sign up to benefit from LotterySK was the Belvoir Cricket and Countryside Trust.

Spokesman Michael Cooke said: “For small charities like us LotterySK will provide a much-needed way of raising funds. We can’t wait for the first draw as getting this money is going to make a real difference to the work we do and the number of young people we can support.

“We'd encourage other local good causes to sign up. All you have to do is commit to spreading the word about your own lottery page and selling at least 20 tickets. But the more you sell, the more you raise.

“We were keen to support the lottery not only for the benefits it can bring to us as a charity but also for the benefit it will bring to people in all the towns and villages in our district. We are delighted South Kesteven District Council decided to launch a lottery here and are really excited to be involved.”

Cllr Kelham Cooke (Con), deputy leader of South Kesteven District Council, which set up the lottery, said: "Raising money is always a challenge, particularly in the current climate. Local lotteries are popular with good causes because it makes fundraising easier, while ticket buyers know that the majority of the ticket price will benefit a local organisation and could win a prize.

“The success of the lottery relies on good causes signing up so that ticket buyers have lots of choice of who they can donate to. It is free for them and it could provide them with much-needed funds. The more tickets good causes sell, the more money goes to them.”

A lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries elsewhere.

Ben Speare, Gatherwell's Managing Director, said: "We are delighted that Gatherwell has been awarded the opportunity to run the new LotterySK. We're looking forward to helping support local causes in the district in partnership with South Kesteven District Council.”

Good causes wishing to find out more information or sign up should go to www.lotterysk.co.uk or email rachael.thornton@southkesteven.gov.uk.
