Barrowby has turned itself into an Advent calendar this December, with 24 houses and businesses decorating their windows to create an innovative countdown to Christmas.

Every evening this month has seen a different house or business displaying a decorated window on an Advent theme. Some of the windows are decorated to illustrate parts of the Christmas story, others, Christmas carols or songs.

They have been on show from 4pm to 8pm each night, and on Christmas Eve all 24 windows will be illuminated for people to view.

The Advent calendar windows project has been organised by Barrowby’s All Saints Church. The organisers said: “The season of Advent often gets overlooked on the run up to Christmas, and we wanted to arrange an event that the whole village could get involved in and enjoy.

“We hope that lots of people will walk round the village on Christmas Eve between 4pm and 8pm to admire the windows, and then join us in the church from 6pm for a warm drink and a mince pie.”

The project has proved popular and the festive diplays are also attracting interest online, with photos of the windows being posted both on the Barrowby All Saints Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BarrowbyAllSaintsChurch/ and on the church’s website at www.barrowbychurch.org.uk

Information about Barrowby’s Christmas services can also be found on the church’s Facebook page and website.

A free list of all the houses and businesses with Advent calendar windows, together with a map showing their locations, can be obtained from the following businesses in the village: Skinner’s Butchers, The Cake Hole, The White Swan and The Post Office.

In addition, a list can be picked up from All Saints Church at the Birthday Party for Jesus service, at 10.30am on Christmas Eve.
