Corby Glen Academy rewarded at star-studded Summer Cup in Grantham
An academy has been recognised for its ‘oustanding sports provision’ following a successful star-studded school sports day in Grantham.
Charles Read Academy in Corby Glen was recognised for its outstanding sports provision at the David Ross Education Trust (DRET) Summer Cup, held at The Meres sports stadium last Wednesday.
The sports event, which was attended by Olympians and Commonwealth athletes including Denise Lewis OBE and Gabby Logan, saw over 30 of the Trust’s academies compete for a chance bring home medals.
Staff and students at Charles Read Academy received the Bailey Drew Memorial Trophy for Sporting Excellence, due to their relentless commitment to sport. The trophy is named in honour of Bailey, a keen sportsman and student at the academy, who sadly passed away last year.
Shane Ward, Sports Enrichment Manager for the David Ross Education Trust, said: “Charles Read Academy has shown an outstanding level of commitment to delivering a wide ranging sports programme for every one of their students.
“The academy has taken part in over 80 fixtures and delivered 533 club sessions throughout the year. For a relatively small academy the level of sporting excellence at Charles Read is superb.”
Principal Robert Sloan added: “I am delighted for our students who have been playing their part throughout every single sporting event this year. They have all shown incredible sportsmanship and pride while representing the academy.
“This year we have seen some incredible individual performances across every event we have taken part in, but it is all about being united as an academy. We are very proud to take home the memorial trophy, in honour of Bailey.”
Denise Lewis, former Olympic champion, said: “I am so honoured to be part of this inspiring event. Being exposed to sport at a young age is so important and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I had not been involved in sporting activities.”
