A COUPLE who retired together on the same day in 2003 are celebrating their golden wedding on Friday (June 3).
Chris and Andy McKinley of Valley Road, Grantham, first met at a dance hall in Andy’s home city of Glasgow.
Chris, who was born and raised in Grantham, had visited the city with friends and liked it so much she found somewhere to live
Chris said: “I used to joke that I had to go 300 miles to get a man!”
They married at a registry office in Glasgow in a small ceremony before buying their first house.
Andy said: “Our first house was only £150. These days, my grandson’s trainers are that price!”
In 1963 the couple moved to Grantham. They first lived in Grantley Street before moving to Gresley Court, Walton Gardens and then Valley Road, where they have been for the past ten years.
They have a son and daughter, Andrew and Karen, as well as four grandsons. The family will all be there for a special party at the Avenue Hotel in Grantham to celebrate this weekend.
Chris spent 22 years of her working life at the Prince William of Gloucester barracks, working as a waitress, receptionist and manager until retirement.
Andy, who worked for 29 years at Commercial Hydraulics, is a former Grantham Journal Sports Personality of the Year in 1989-90.
A former boxer, Andy hit the heights in weight-lifting, winning five British titles as well as Commonwealth gongs.
Keeping fit is one of the hobbies which unites the couple to this day.
Andy said: “Enjoying the same interests is very important. We both used to bike to work everyday for 30-odd years and we still go on bike rides along the canal.
“We also go to the gym together.”
