A CYCLIST threw down a bag of cannabis while being pursued by police in an attempt to escape being caught with the class B drug.

Grantham magistrates heard on Wednesday how Jake Gill, of South Parade, Grantham, was first spotted by police officers while riding a bike on the pavement in Trent Road, Grantham.

Jill Derby, prosecuting, told the court: “He turned and saw the officers and they saw him ride away at some pace.

“They followed him and saw him throw something down on the floor.”

Gill was stopped a short distance away and when asked what he had thrown on the floor, a substance officers had already recovered, he admitted it was cannabis.

Rob Aruthur, defending, told magistrates the defendant had made the admission straight away, adding that the amount of the drug was “enough for a single spliff”.

Magistrates granted a nine-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £40 towards court costs.
