A GAMBLING addict who admitted stealing razors from Boots in Grantham told the court he was “up to his eyeballs” in debt.

David Smith, of Mallard Court, Grantham, admitted taking the razors costing £80.94 on February 2, even though he had £600 in cash on him at the time.

Rory Macmillan, defending, said Smith did not plan to steal the items when he went into the store but he has debt problems caused by using fruit machines.

Magistrates gave Smith a community order with 40 hours’ unpaid work and told him to pay £85 costs. Asking to pay £5 per week he told the court: “I’m in debt up to my eyeballs.”
