A shoplifter was chased out of a store by staff after he stole five jars of coffee.

Ruben Da Silva, 36, of Norton Street, Grantham, admitted the theft of the jars, valued at £24.45, from Aldi in Grantham on February 3.

Prosecuting, Daniel Pietryka said that Da Silva had been with another male when the theft took place.

He was chased by staff and stopped shortly afterwards.

He had said he wanted to pay for the coffee after taking it, but Mr Pietryka said he had been interviewed by police twice since.

He had told police he was outside the store when someone handed him the bag and told him to run.

He had said he did not know what was in the bag.

Defending, Sonia Bhalla said her client was already subject to a suspended sentence order.

She said he was a prolific shoplifter with a drug habit and was on a prescription for methadone.

Miss Bhalla said her client had said he was sorry for the offence and was making good progress. He was in the care of Addaction.

Magistrates adjourned the case until march 30 for a probation report. Da Silva is on bail on condition he does not enter any retail premises except Boots or Asda in Grantham.
