Dad-of-two Luke Mayer broke into a Fiat Punto using a screwdriver but fled the scene after he was unable to get the car started.
Mayer, of West Street, Folkingham, admitted attempted theft of a motor vehicle after breaking into the car which was parked in West Road, Billingborough, on September 24.
The court heard Mayer, who was with an accomplice at the time of the offence, made full admissions in his police interview.
Rob Arthur, defending, said Mayer was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offence. He added: “He went along with a stupid course of action.”
Mayer, 30, was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work. He must pay costs of £85 and a £60 surcharge.
