A Grantham man pleaded guilty to stealing £300 from his sister.
The court heard how up until February, 27-year-old Stuart Lee from Thames Road, Grantham had full-time employment in the retail trade.
However he was now on job seeker’s allowance and initially there had been a problem with him receiving it.
Jane Bauer, defending, explained that Lee committed the theft when he had no money and that when it was discovered by the family he asked for the police to be contacted himself.
Mrs Bauer added that her client now wanted to rebuild his relationship with the family.
Magistrates ruled that Lee should serve a community order lasting 12 months, during which he must complete 50 hours of unpaid work.
They also placed a compensation order for him to pay back the £300, as well as a victim surcharge of £60.
