A TEENAGER was subjected to a serious sexual assault in Grantham town centre, and police are launching an appeal to find her attacker.
The sexual assault happened at about 6.45am on New Year’s Day as the 17-year-old girl was making her way home. As she walked from the Market Place on to the High Street, a man grabbed her arm and pushed her against the window of Addaction.
During the attack, the victim managed to get away by scratching at his face. The suspect then continued along the High Street and into Guildhall Street, then turned left into Westgate.
Detectives are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who recognises the description of the man to come forward.
He is described as a mixed race man, aged in his 20s or 30s, around 5ft tall, of a skinny build, with medium length black hair. He spoke with a slight accent and was wearing dark clothing.
A police spokesman said: “At this time in the morning the Late Lounge was still open and there were people around the area of the Market Place.
“Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time who saw a man matching this description or who saw the victim walking through town, or who saw the suspect and victim together on the High Street.
“Officers are asking residents if they remember where they were at 6.45am on New Year’s Day? Were they in Grantham town centre perhaps after a night out, or leaving for work in the early hours?
“Officers would also like to speak to anyone who can identify the suspect or saw someone matching his description in the area immediately prior to the incident. Officers believe the suspect either lives locally to the Market Place or were in the area prior to the incident.”
Anyone with any information should contact Grantham Police Station on 0300 111 0300 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
