A RECOVERING alcoholic celebrated moving to Grantham by attempting to steal a bottle of vodka from B&M Bargains in the High Street.

Jeffrey Wood, of William Street, Grantham admitted the theft after being spotted by store security who then alerted police.

The 45-year-old was arrested outside the store and told officers he had just moved to Grantham so “thought he would try it out”.

Wood, defending himself, said: “As soon as they caught up with me I said ‘fair cop’ and that was it.

“I sincerely apologise for wasting everyone’s time.”

Wood was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

Chair of Magistrates Adam Moody told Wood: “You need to keep out of trouble.”
