A VAN driver will be sentenced next month after he admitted causing the death of a Wellingore pensioner when he drifted onto the wrong side of the road.
Ernest Norton, 84, was airlifted to Lincoln County Hospital after his car was in collision with a Fiat Ducato van driven by Manjit Sumal on the A607 at Leadenham. Mr Norton died later the same day of his injuries.
The front seat passenger in Mr Norton’s car was also taken to Lincoln County Hospital with serious injuries but Sumal and his 17-year-old passenger were not reported injured.
42-year-old Sumal, of Melton Road, Littleover, Derby, admitted causing Mr Norton’s death by careless driving when he appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday.
Gareth Wheetman, prosecuting, said there was no suggestion that Sumal was trying to cut the corner or speeding when he collided with Mr Norton on a right hand bend.
Mr Wheetman told the court: “He wasn’t paying sufficient attention and went into the right hand lane.”
Mark Watson, defending, asked for sentence to be adjourned for a probation report to be prepared on Sumal.
Sumal was granted bail until next month when he will be sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court.
