TRADING Standards officers in Lincolnshire are warning people to beware of fraudsters posing as government officials.
The warning comes as people are being contacted by phone and told they are owed large sums of money by the government. Any victim of a scam should call Trading Standards on 01522 782341.
Lincolnshire Trading Standards is urging people to ignore the imposters and warning against transferring money in the hope of getting more back.
Mark Keal, service manager from Lincolnshire Trading Standards, said: “The intention of the scam is to persuade someone to send money on the promise of a larger return.
“It’s awful that we can’t trust other people, but just because someone tells you they’re from a prominent organisation doesn’t mean they actually are. In fact, they rely on you being taken in by the organisation’s good name and reputation.
“Whenever someone pressures you out of the blue – be it for money, contact information or personal details – treat them with scepticism because genuine organisations don’t do that. And if it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.”
