Dambusters dig aims to find operations room

Have your say

ARCHAEOLOGISTS investigating at St Vincent’s in Grantham are hopeful they may find a long-rumoured underground operations room.

Grantham Archaeology Group are looking into rumours of the underground site said to have been used by the top brass on the night of the Dambusters raid.

Dave Hibbitt of GAG said: “We have been investigating several potential areas where the underground operations room was meant to be located and have now started to uncover what appears to be structures almost two metres deep underground.”

The group has undertaken geophysical surveying to help locate buried features but it is too early to say if they are associated with the underground operations room.

Mr Hibbbit said: “The evidence is stacking up.”
