The future of a village pub hangs in the balance with the deadline for a rescue bid this Thursday.

The Thorold Arms at Marston will go up for sale at auction this week unless villagers can come up with enough money to buy it and keep it running as a pub.

The Save The Thorold Arms Campaign has raised £115,000 so far through a Community Share Offer, which is a record amount per household for this type of project. But the campaign needs more money to buy and refurbish the pub. The receivers have said that the pub will go to auction on July 21.

A single share can be bought for £50 which also gives the shareholder voting membership of The Thorold Arms (CBS) Ltd.

Campaigner Sandra Allen described the situation as ‘desperate’. She said: “If we cannot persuade the auctioneers to withdraw it or get them to accept an offer from us then it will be a disaster for the village. Everybody says we cannot give up. We need to keep the pub.”

Sandra added: “There will be developers at the auction who will be bidding to buy the pub and turn it into housing. We are still hopeful but it is a desperate situation.”

The auction will be held at noon on Thursday at Elland Road football ground in Leeds.
