One of the area’s most dedicated community volunteers, Hazel Tebb, has died.

Mrs Tebb, a founder of Grantham Stroke Club, died in Lincoln County Hospital. She was 83.

Her stalwart volunteering earned her the Lincolnshire Citizen of the Year award in 2009.

The accolade, awarded by the county council, brought her an invitation to a royal tea party at Buckingham Palace in the presence of The Queen

and Duke of Edinburgh.

The occasion made a big impression on Hazel, who said afterwards: “I’ve never experienced anything like that day in my life. It was just

amazing and means everything to me.”

Hazel was born in Marston and married husband Tom in 1950. They moved to Long Bennington three years later.

Shortly after moving to the village she became involved in running the youth club and was a member of the sports and social club, the village produce association and the village hall committee.

For 26 years she was fundraiser for the Darby and Joan Club and was also tea lady for the village cricket club.

Her husband suffered a stroke in 1976 and later Hazel and the then Long Bennington GP were founder members of Grantham Stroke Club, for whom she was a conscientious fundraiser for more than 30 years.

She was also an ardent collector for numerous charities, especially the Royal British Legion, and sold remembrance poppies for more than

30 years.

She worked at Freeman Brown’s bakery until 1966 and then at The Royal Oak pub in the village until 1992.

Her son Richard said: “She just loved helping people and was involved with everything. Even up until she started to slow down about a year ago she was popping into people’s homes to help them if they needed a hand, and many of them were younger than her.

“She was still riding her bike up until 18 months ago.”

A funeral attended by more than 140 mourners was held at St Swithun’s Church Long Bennington.

Donations were received for Grantham Stroke Club and the air ambulance.
