Dementia books donated to library to boost awareness of disease

Volunteers from Grantham Volunteer Dementia Support (GVDS) have donated books to Grantham Library in a bid to boost understanding of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The support group hosted drop-in sessions to mark Dementia Action Week, from Monday, May 20 to Friday, May 25.

At the end of the week, Janet Leeson and Bridget Warne donated 11 books to Charlotte Harris, acting team leader at Grantham Library, on behalf of the support group.

Donated titles included A Pocket Guide to Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias, by Dr James Warner and Dr Nori Graham, Will I Still Be Me, by Christine Bryden, and The Memory Activity Book, by Helen Lambert.

Charlotte added: “We were delighted to have the Grantham Volunteer Dementia Support back at Grantham Library to raise awareness of local support groups in the area. Dementia affects so many people and especially family members and carers and it’s important that there are support links and people to turn to. The books that were kindly donated will be a valuable resource for those looking for more information.”

The GVDS was set up 30 years ago when the need for a carers’ support group was realised. They now meet on the last Friday of every month between 2pm and 4pm at Greyfriars Centre, Grantham.
