Drugs trial update: Grantham man ‘caught up in major drugs operation by accident’
A Grantham man alleged to have been involved in a major drugs supply gang has told a jury that he was innocent and was caught up in the operation by accident.
Adam Gill, giving evidence to the jury at Lincoln Crown Court, said he arranged to meet Martin Cooper, one of the men who has admitted his part in the conspiracy, to collect payment for painting and decorating work he had done at Mr Cooper’s house.
Gill said he went to the Urban Hotel in Grantham where he was expecting to receive his £100 fee for the work.
He told the jury that at the time Mr Cooper was on trial at Nottingham Crown Court accused of a separate conspiracy to supply drugs. Gill said he believed Cooper was visiting the hotel after court had finished as Cooper used the gym at the Urban.
Gill said Cooper was a friend of a friend adding: “I know Martin. He’s lived on the estate all his life, same as me. I’ve done work round his house.”
Gill told the jury that he was in the hotel reception when Paul Hull, another member of the drugs gang, arrived.
Hull and Cooper then went to one of the rooms but Gill said he remained in the reception.
The prosecution claim that a consignment of drugs was handed over at the hotel as undercover an police officer watched.
Gill denied any involvement and told the jury: “It was nothing to do with me. It’s ridiculous. Martin Cooper asked to meet him there. I assumed he was at the gym. I got a message to go down to the Urban Hotel.”
Gill is one of five men on trial accused of involvement in the supply of drugs. James Straw, 50, of Petersmith Drive, New Ollerton, Newark; Stuart Frazier, 54, of Princess Drive, Grantham; Jamie Darby, 39, of Princess Drive, Grantham; Anthony Morton, 27, of Tamar Court, Grantham; and Adam Gill, 29 , of South Parade, Grantham; all deny charges of conspiracy to supply drugs between January 1 and October 23 2014.
The jury has been told that eight men and one woman have admitted charges of conspiracy to supply drugs between the same dates. They are Jonathan Paul Ferry, 46, of Larch Close, Grantham; Paul Hull, 47, of Grantley Street, Grantham; Adam Higgs, 24, of Shaw Road, Grantham; Ashley Toulson, 27, of Edward Street, Grantham; Tyrone Sly, 45, of Bye Path Road, Retford; Ryan Anderson, 30, of Walmer Street, Gorton, Manchester; Martin Cooper, 30, formerly of Grantham; Francesca Moynihan, 22, of Hawthorn Drive, Salford; and Luke Smith, 30, of Goulden Street, Salford.
The trial continues.
