Principal of the Corby Glen school Robert Sloan said: “We are delighted. What is particularly pleasing is that English and maths results have rocketed.

“Nearly double the number of students will now leave us with an English qualification, with similar progress in maths. This shows that more students are securing the vital GCSEs – which bodes very well for their future success and shows that the changes we are making are having a real impact. It is pleasing to see that student’s progress in English and mathematics is in line or better than last year’s national average for many student groups

“Our aim now is to ensure that this success is mirrored across every other subject at Charles Read.”

Among those celebrating were Ralph Shilcock and Sophie Garlick, who between them secured five A*s, 11 As and six Bs.

Sophie said: “I am so delighted! My results were better than I expected and I cannot wait to go on and study A-levels in maths, psychology and ICT next year.”

As students opened their results, there was a very different feel to this time last year at the academy, said Mr Sloan.

He added: “It is incredible the difference that 12 months can make. Not only can our students leave us with better qualifications, the opportunities that they have had during this time are unrivalled. This helps support their future UCAS and college applications, as well helping them stand out from the crowd in the eyes of future employers.

“Royal visits, competing in front of some of the biggest names in sports, trips around the House of Lords…opportunities like this are a frequent part of academy life here.”

Wendy Marshall, chief executive of the David Ross Education Trust, which runs the school, praised students and staff for grasping the opportunities on offer.

She said: “This is the first major milestone for Charles Read since it joined the David Ross Education Trust last September.

“We have very high aspirations for the academy, and these results show that collectively we are making huge steps in the right direction.

“All the signs are there that this is, however, just the first of many fantastic exams results for Charles Read students. I look forward to sharing in their future successes.”
