April saw the end of a 10-week sugarcraft course where students put their new skills into practice with impressive results.
Under the guidance of tutor Tracie West at Grantham College, the evening course taught basic modelling skills, crimping and embossing, basic royal icing, brush embroidery and filler work, as well as hand painting with edible oils (made from scratch) and wired flowers.
Tracie said: “I am so proud of all the students as creating these pieces in such a short space of time is incredible.”
Students Rachel McDonald, Heather Morton, Achine Kurukulasooriya, Samantha Percy and Jessica Spence each created a cake, with a theme of their own choice, on a board with a decorative pair of baby boots, as their final assignment.
Rachel created a ‘tospy turvy’ cake and the delicate pink boots on it were covered in 200 tiny flowers, something she is hoping to add to her daughter’s Christening cake.
And Samantha‘s cake board took on the Disney film “Frozen” as its theme, complete with hand painted lettering.
All the students created individual and impressive work.
Tracie, chief lecturer, has been at Grantham College for 10 years where she began working as head cook in the refectory.
Over the last five years she has worked her way up gaining her teaching qualifications at Grantham College.
Self-taught in sugarcraft, Tracie has taken students into international competitions with great success.
Planning is already underway to repeat the course for next academic year as well as classes in royal icing for beginners, beginners sugar flowers and Christmas cakes.
