A primary school teaching assistant has been selected as a finalist in the Outstanding Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) of the Year Awards for the East Midlands.

Karen Rigby, a HLTA at Little Gonerby Infant School, in Sandon Road, is one of only four finalists from the whole region and the only finalist to have been picked from Lincolnshire.

Headteacher Helen Hilton said: “Karen works tirelessly to support both the children and her colleagues and we are delighted that her dedication to the children at Little Gonerby has been recognised with this award.”

Mrs Rigby has worked at the school for 13 years and has been a HLTA since 2006.

Her role includes teaching across all year groups in
the school, supporting individual pupils and groups with their learning needs, and leading a team of 10 teaching assistants.

She also helps to run the healthy schools team and
the school’s popular cooking club.

Mrs Rigby was nominated by her colleagues at the school because of her “unshaking belief that every child deserves the best and can achieve beyond our expectations”, who also said: “she always goes the extra mile to help others, especially those children who need it the most”.

The awards were organised by the University of Northampton and took place at Devonshire Place in Leicester on June 23.

The winners will be announced later in the year and will be automatically put through to the national competition.
