England cricketer Luke Wright has continued his support for the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund by raising money through a celebrity-filled gala.

For Luke, who earlier this month was announced as club captain for Sussex, the charity is close to his heart as his uncle, Roy Wright, is one of the three trustees.

His most recent event, a dinner at Quaglino’s Restaurant in Mayfair, was attended by Roy as a special guest. Roy said: “It was a special event. It was about raising the profile of the charity, and to help raise funds for the nominated charities. On the night, Luke achieved the magnificent sum of £34,000 from a charity auction alone.”

A number of sporting stars in cricket and football were present, including All Blacks and Munster legend Doug Howlett, who is also Luke’s brother-in-law.

Roy added: “Luke made a speech during the night thanking everyone for attending and thanking them for supporting him, and said he was very much looking forward to presenting cheques to his charities.”
