The family of a well-known Grantham man who has a rare form of cancer say they are overwhelmed by the response to their appeal for help.

Last week, the Journal reported on the Bullimore family’s appeal for help to fund treatment for their father, Karl, and research into the rare form of bladder cancer that he was diagnosed with in October last year.

The family wants to raise enough money to pay for special chemotherapy drugs which cost £5,000 for each session. And they want to raise at least £50,000 for the research which they have to pay for themselves because the cancer – a stage four advanced bladder cancer – is so rare.

Karl, 63, is married to Ret and they have two daughters, Karla and Kelly. Karl has been a keen sportsman, having played for Harrowby United and also being a member of Grantham Swimming Club as a swimmer and coach.

Karla told the Journal: “As a family we are so overwhelmed with the kindness and support from friends, colleagues and even people we don’t know or who haven’t seen dad for years.

“The Meres Leisure Centre has been absolutely fantastic and we already have an event booked in for Saturday, July 9. This will be a fun day in the main hall with children’s activities and The Juggernaut inflatable assault course, as well as the water shoot in the pool area.

“We are hoping to hold a table top sale at The Meres too, so if anyone has any items to sell this will be a perfect opportunity for others to raise money.

“Grantham Swimming Club has kindly donated already and are looking at holding some summer-long events which is absolutely amazing.

“Harrowby Utd and Grantham Town FC are looking at organising a charity football match. This will be great fun for everyone to get involved.

“We have had some kind donations for raffle prizes but still ask if anyone has anything else, such as vouchers, wine, day experiences, food hampers, etc, we would be so grateful.

“We are so keen to reach our target over the next few months and continue to ask for the community’s support.

“We can’t stop here as there is still a lot to raise to cover the costs of the research and treatment. The costs are ongoing but we are determined that with the continued support of everyone we can get through this difficult time.”
