As outgoing Mayor of Grantham Frank Turner prepared to leave the parlour, he presented his chosen charities with hefty cheques.

In May last year, Councillor Turner chose to support the Grantham Journal Children’s Fund, Grantham Hospice and Belvoir Castle Cricket Trust during his year in office.

So successful were his fund-raisers that he was able to donate £2,000 to each cause. And not only that, he was able to give £300 each to a further three groups – Grantham Youth Theatre, Grantham Operatic Society and St Wulfram’s Church.

Coun Turner said: “To raise so much is more than we could’ve asked. We raised £800 more than the last time I was mayor in 2005.”

Cheques were presented during a farewell party in the parlour on Thursday.

Journal deputy editor Marie Baker collected the cheque on behalf of the children’s fund. She said: “We’re so thankful to the mayor for his kind donation. It helps us to further raise the profile of the fund, which exists to help families with disabled children.”

Darren Bicknell accepted the cheque on behalf of the cricket trust, which aims to encourage children to be more active and enjoy the outdoors. He said: “To get £2,000 from somebody who has worked hard for you is fantastic. We’re delighted.”

Tina Dingley, hospice assistant fund-raising manager, said: “I would like to extend our very grateful thanks to Mayor Frank Turner for choosing the hospice as one of his charities to support during his time as mayor. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed to his fund-raising efforts raising a magnificent £2,000.”

During the party in the parlour, mayor’s officer Peter Bates presented Coun Turner with an album filled with photos taken over the course of the year. Coun Turner thanked him and went on to say: “It’s been a great year. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and met some wonderful people and seen some fantastic shows.”
