Christmas attractions will be spread across town this year
A change of heart will see attractions return to Market Place and Westgate for this year’s Christmas event in Grantham.
The past two years have seen the festivities brought together on St Peter’s Hill, a move which caused an outcry from business owners in Westgate who felt they were missing out.
Now, South Kesteven District Council has decided to return the fairground rides, stalls and refreshments to the Market Place and Westgate.
Meanwhile, the Grantham Carnival Events Group will hold Christmas on the Green on St Peter’s Hill, complete with winter wonderland, Santa’s grotto, reindeer, live music and more.
Events group committee chairman Roy Wright said: “Grantham Carnival and events group together with SKDC have put in many hours organising the town’s Christmas market and Christmas on the Green.
“The day will have something for everyone and I feel sure will be the perfect start to your Christmas festivities so wrap up warm and come out and enjoy.
“The organisers wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.”
Traditionally held on the last Sunday in November, the festivities will this year take place on Saturday, November 30, from 11am to 6pm.
The build-up to the switching-on of the Christmas tree lights and fireworks begins at 3.30pm in the Market Place, where a Christmas tree will be blessed by Father Stuart Cradduck, rector of St Wulfram’s Church.
A candlelit procession will lead through Westgate to the St Peter’s Hill green. At 4.30pm, the blessing of the tree on the green will take place, followed by carol singing.
Then at 5pm the Christmas lights will be turned on and a firework finale will bring the day to a close. The event will tie in with the Christmas Tree Festival taking place in St Wulfram’s Church from November 27 to December 1.
