Firefighters will call in to Grantham dementia cafe in support of Alzheimer’s Society
Grantham firefighters are working with the Alzheimer’s Society and will be attending the town’s Dementia Café at the Alive Church in Castlegate today between 11am and 1.30pm.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting Dementia Awareness Week (May 15 to 21). The café offers a safe and supportive environment for people with dementia and their carers to socialise, as well as an opportunity for those who have concerns about a relative to get help and advice.
Across the county, the service’s firefighters and fire safety specialists will also focus part of their home visits on helping people living with dementia and also providing advice to prevent the risks of developing it.
Firefighter Maria Buck from Grantham Fire Station, said: “Those suffering with dementia are at increased risk of fire due to symptoms including forgetfulness and getting easily distracted.
“We are seeing an increasing number of people in our community with dementia and with an increasing ageing population - we know this is set to continue.
“In order for us to have a greater understanding of dementia, we have had specialist training by the Alzheimer’s Society and are now Dementia Friends.
“As well as going out into the community, the service’s team of fire safety specialists also identify those who are most vulnerable in the community and carry out Home Safety Checks (HSC) in their homes.
“A HSC gives us the an opportunity to go into people’s homes and offer vital safety advice on subjects such as escape routes, electrical safety and smoke alarms.”
Residents who would like advice or to see if they qualify for a free Home Safety visit can call 01476 565441.
