Flats approved for former Grantham social club

The former Electric Social club is to be converted into six flats.

Belvoir Estates has won planning approval for the redevelopment on Commercial Road from South Kesteven District Council.

The project will involve converting the existing two storey building into five two-bed flats and one one-bed flat.

The move follows the former social club being empty for several years and plans to turn it into a dance studio coming to nothing.

A planning officer’s report, which recommended approval, said nearby residents noted the scheme came with no parking and would add to existing congested roads, there was no amenity space for the residents and it would harm privacy.

But the report also said the town centre location of the scheme would boost housing supply, there would be little external work on the conversion so the character of the area would be unaffected.

Design changes would minimise any harmful privacy effects in an area already lacking it. Since the site was close to public transport, there would be no harmful impact on highway safety.
