The focus was on food and cooking at a Grantham primary school, when pupils were visited by food education organisation Roots to Food.

During the day, Key Stage 2 children at Belmont Primary School went head-to-head in a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ inspired show.

Both teams were asked to cook from ingredients they were given and judging came from the audience.

Many tips were given on how to eat healthily and what the different food groups do for our bodies.

Teams cooked tandoori salmon with sag aloo and pilau rice, and twice cooked parmesan chicken with pasta in a chunky tomato sauce.

The salmon was the clear winner.

In the afternoon, Key Stage 1 and Early Years were given a high intensity work-out to raise their heart rates. They were taught the importance of healthy eating and exercise and their impacts on the body.

They were then treated to a making and tasting of banana milkshakes; popular with most of the children.

Finally, parents were invited into school to watch a short cooking demonstration. This session was to promote healthy eating on a budget.

Parents were then invited to taste Cajun infused meatballs with noodles and a sweet and sour sauce.
