What initially started as just a hobby to pass the time has resulted in a publishing deal.

Kim, who works in a daycentre for adults with learning difficulties said: “I’ve always got my nose in a book and have lots of ideas. So much so, that my daughter Rebecca bought me an A4 notebook last year and told me to start writing them all down. As my husband has to get up in the early hours of the morning for work, he would often go to bed before me. I’m not a big fan of the TV, so id use the quiet time to write for a few hours. I had an idea for the middle and the end of the story and the rest was just filling in the gaps.”

The Gatehouse tells the story of Amber, who grows up carefree and content with her mother in their cosy home The Gatehouse. Happy childhood days played out in the wood and the garden of the big house away down the drive, a place to which she is always enticed, but forbidden to play, and always warned to stay away. Befriended by a gypsy boy the beguiling Jem, Amber is told she is always watched over, and never alone.

Amber’s dreams of entering the big house are at last fulfilled by a chance encounter with an elderly gentleman out one day in the wood; a key is given, in exchange for her silence; a secret

Although Kim enjoyed writing the book, it wasn’t always so straight forward.

She added: “Probably one of the biggest challenges that I had to face was learning how to type from scratch. I’d only ever typed text messages before, so I had to go back to basics. I did have my doubts but I’m so glad that I perservered.”

So does Kim have plans to write another?

She added: “I’ve actually started on my next story, but I’m in no rush. I want to enjoy Gatehouse first.”

The Gatehouse from Farthings Publishing is available to purchase on Amazon and Lulu, the online book store.
