Gallery: Students are stars of the show at Grantham College awards
Friday evening saw Grantham College hold its annual awards ceremony which celebrates the achievements of its star students over the last academic year, this year taking on the theme of Alice in Wonderland.
The ceremony was attended by over 270 guests including the award winners themselves, their families and friends, corporation members, staff and sponsors, including main sponsor of the evening Anglian Water.
The college was proud to host ex-head of art and design, and published author, Ian Maber as guest speaker for the evening. Ian spoke about his achievements which have seen him travel the world working for the likes of Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dubai, Russia and India.
Ian made references from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland book, such as ‘I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then’ to his work and achievements and inspiring those students who were about to embark on a new journey, be it into further study at Grantham College, to university or into the world of work.
Performing arts students entertained the audience with an Alice in Wonderland-themed dance, monologue and song, which received a tremendous applause from the audience.
The evening was bought to a close by the chairman of the corporation at Grantham College, Mos Kalbassi, who thanked the students for giving it their all this year as well as the parents who have been supporting them.
Special thanks went to the learning development students and staff who helped to make many of the Alice in Wonderland-themed props, ex-student David Bridle who was the official photographer for the evening and Dotty Cakes by Sophie, another ex-student who provided Alice in Wonderland-themed cupcakes, biscuits and jam tarts.
Altogether, the accomplishments of 85 students were recognised at the event, with Matthew Annan, from the construction curriculum area, winning the Student of the Year award.
Many thanks were also given by the college to the sponsors of this year’s ceremony who made the evening possible, including Anglian Water, The West Grantham Academies Trust, Eve Taylor, IML, Salon Services, Victor Wood Grantham, Reflections Practice Ltd, Jackson Building Centres, SKDC, Total Care Security, Grantham Town Football Club, National Trust, Wickes and Headstart Nursery, which provided nine three-foot toadstools hand-painted by the girls and boys at the nursery.
