General Election 2019: Counting begins for Grantham and Stamford constituency

Ballot papers have arrived from the first of 86 polling stations in the Grantham and Stamford constituency, joining the postal votes that people began counting at 10pm.

Tonight's count is taking place at Meres Leisure Centre in Grantham, where parliamentary candidate hopefuls are expected to gather to hear the result at about 3am.

It will conclude a month of campaigning for the four candidates: Harrish Bisnauthsing (Lib Dem), Gareth Davies (Con), Anne Gayfer (Green Party) and Kathryn Salt (Lab).

Only one of them will attend Parliament on Tuesday next week (December 17) when MPs are expected to attend to elect of the Speaker of the House of Commons and be 'sworn in' - swearing their allegiance to the Crown or making an solemn affirmation.

About 60 people are currently involved in the counting of the votes here in Grantham, while several hundred more manned polling stations which were open from 7am until 10pm today.
