Gift from Margaret Thatcher sells for £25,000 at Grantham auction house

An antique Japanese incense burner ‘koro’ has sold for £25,000 at a Grantham auction house after being gifted to the vendor by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The ‘two-colour patinated bronze koro, with gilt piquet work embellishments, silvered inlays and aplliques of coral and mother-of-pearl’ was sold by auctioneers Golding Young & Mawer at The Grantham Auction Rooms, Old Wharf Road, on Thursday.

The vendor received the gift after working with the Thatcher family as a logistics consultant on a number of occasions including their removal from Downing Street. It was simply given as a thank you for his help.
