Grantham Rivercare Group leader John Knowles has sent in this picture of an armchair dumped in the River Witham in Wyndham Park.

Rivercare only recently carried out a clean-up of the Witham before Christmas. The group won the Journal’s Grantham is Great Community Project of the Year 2015 award.

Mr Knowles said: “We have an armchair in the middle of the river just below the White Bridge. It must have taken quite a lot of effort to hurl it into the river and did no one see them do it? Surely it would have been easier to have taken it to the refuse collection point on Alexandra Road.

“If only someone could be caught and then charged. For me a suitable punishment might be a fine of £1,000 and working on all Rivercare clean-ups for a year. It would be easy to become disheartened bearing in mind it was only just before Christmas that we completed the latest clean-up. But I know that will not happen. However we will have to wait for the water level to drop before retrieving the armchair.”
