Grantham biltong company wins nine stars in taste awards

A south African food shop in Grantham is among the Great Taste winners of 2019.

The Biltong Farm Ltd in Bridge End Road, Grantham, won a variety of stars in the world’s most coveted food and drink awards, which is organised by the Guild of Fine Food.

It is the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink and has been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world.

Out of 12,772 products sent in from over 100 different countries, The Biltong Farm Ltd was awarded a total of nine stars on a variety of products and flavours.

A two-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed it above and beyond delicious, was awarded to their Peri Peri Biltong and Sriracha Snapstix.

They were also awarded a one-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed it a food that delivers fantastic flavour for its Sriracha Biltong, Smokey BBQ Biltong, Habanero Inferno Biltong, Original Snapstix and their Black Pepper Snapstix.

The products are judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists.

Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting by hundreds of judges.

It is also recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike.

Gavin Smith launched Biltong Farm as a production unit to create the unusual food delicacy in 2016 alongside his wife Rebecca. It was the first time that biltong, a form of dried cured meat, had been produced in Grantham. The couple are delighted with the results.

Gavin said: “We are delighted that The Guild of Fine Foods has judged our products against our peers and have recognised the quality and distinctive flavour that we strive to achieve. We will use this positive confirmation that we are achieving professional accreditation and will continue to produce the best quality products.”

Great Taste 2019 will reach its finale next month, when the world of fine food gathers in London to find out the Great Taste Golden Fork trophy winners for each region, with the final applause reserved for the Great Taste Supreme Champion 2019.
