A children’s charity in Grantham which has previously focused on youngsters with hearing impairments has expanded to include all disablilties.

Grantham Deaf Children’s Society has been renamed Grantham Disabled Children’s Society after a 20-month consultation process.

Trustees worked with members and the public to gain their views before taking the decision unanimously.

A statement from trustees read: “Behind the scenes GDCS has been working with partner organisations and on various working groups for quite some time now, so our role there would not change.”

GDCS was founded in 2009 by Matt and Kim Sherwood. The couple moved to Grantham in 2003 with their deaf son and decided to set up the support group for families with similar circumstances. The group offered a chance for deaf children to socialise and also for parents to share information.

Although the legal process to officially change the name of the charity will be completed later in the year, all future events put on by GDCS will be open to all families with disabled children.

Such events include:

* Tomorrow (Saturday) - Open day at Swingbridge Children’s Centre in Trent Road, Grantham, from 11am to 1pm. Families are invited to go along to head about the charity and the activities it organises. Children will be able to play together while parents meet.

* Saturday, October 19 - Halloween Party, Swingbridge Children’s Centre, 11am to 1pm. Children and adults are invited for some “spooky fun”.

* Saturday, November 16 - ‘Furry Friends’ with Katy from Pets at Home, at Swingbridge Children’s Centre, 11am to 1pm. A variety of furry critters will be there for children to meet.

* Sunday, December 22 - Christmas dinner with Santa at the Angel and Royal Hotel in Grantham. A three-course meal will be served for children and parents (a children’s menu will be available) followed by a visit from Santa who will bring a present for each child.
