Drivers in Grantham are being asked to check they use reputable garages and businesses which dispose of used tyres from their vehicles responsibly with registered waste trade carriers.

In doing this you are doing your bit to help the Grantham Clean and Green campaign, a partnership between SKDC and the Journal.

Tyres are increasingly found among fly-tipping in the district, causing pollution and eyesores to the local environment. Despite enforcement action some businesses and individuals do not make the necessary legal checks and continue supplying unregistered waste carriers, illegal waste sites or those who export waste illegally.

Typically they are charged around 60p per tyre for correct disposal and must ensure they are recycled or removed correctly under their duty of care.

SKDC’s portfolio holder for healthy environment Councillor John Smith said: “When having a tyre changed at your garage, why not ask which registered waste carrier they use to dispose of them?

“We know our local businesses take this very seriously but there are unfortunately still those who handle waste tyres illegally. They do not invest in appropriate safeguards and can dispose of the tyres more cheaply than legitimate waste contractors.

“They undercut legitimate business, reduce tax receipts and pose a direct threat to sustainable growth in the waste tyre sector. Waste crime is estimated to cost the UK as much as £1 billion a year.”

Anyone who is suspicious of illegal disposal of tyres or who witnesses fly-tipping in South Kesteven should call 01476 40 60 80 or email ehs@southkesteven.gov.uk
