A newsagent employee who stole nearly £5,000 worth of scratch cards from work has been ordered to pay the full amount back in compensation.

Damien Davis, aged 22, of Victoria Street, Grantham had appeared in front of magistrates on December 15 and pleaded guilty to stealing £4,898 worth of scratch cards from Michelsons News Agents between July 1 and October 8 this year.

The case was adjourned on the last occasion for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

Davis, who has no previous convictions, said he had stolen the scratch cards after building up large debts from payday loans.

After initially denying the thefts to his manager, when questioned again Davis admitted he had taken them.

Following the report magistrates ruled that Davis must pay back the full amount in installments.
