Grantham court: Father was over the limit while on the school run

Court news.
Court news.

A father forgot to pick up his daughter from school after drinking alcohol he had bought that afternoon.

James Edward Ginnelly, 44, of Sunningdale, Grantham, admitted drink driving on November 13.

Prosecuting, Paul Wood told the court that Ginnelly was spoken to by police after he crashed his Vauxhall Zafira into a stationary vehicle on Harrowby Road. He failed a roadside breath test which measured 77 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

He told police that he had been playing golf that morning but the game was cut short and he had gone home, buying eight cans of alcohol on the way back. He drank some of the alcohol and forgot to pick up his daughter. Mr Wood said Ginnelly hurriedly got into his car and then collided with the vehicle. His other daughter was in the car with him at the time.

The court heard that Ginnelly was now in the care of a counsellor because of a history of alcohol use and depression.

Chris Pye-Smith, defending, said Ginnelly was receiving help for depression which had resulted in alcohol abuse. This was his first offence.

The magistrates disqualfieid Ginnelly from driving for 20 months which will be reduced by five months if he completes a drink driver’s rehabilitation course. He was ordered to pay a fine of £290 with £85 costs and £29 victim surcharge.
