A 37-year-old said he stole a joint of lamb to feed himself and his dog.

Darren Dowell, of Launder Terrace, Grantham, pleaded guilty to the theft of £19.53 worth of meat from Sainbury’s in Grantham on June 18.

Prosecutor Daniel Pietryka explained that defendant was seen taking the lamb and passing it to another man who put it in a bag before they both left the supermarket.

Dowell made a ‘full and frank admission’ to police during interview, telling them that the meat was ‘for him and his dog’ related Mr Pietryka.

The defendant also said he had been drunk at the time.

This shoplifting also put Dowell in breach of a conditional discharge.

Stuart Wild, defending, highlighted that while his client had a number of convictions dating back from 2004, there had been a significant gap in his offending recently.

“He had shown that he can keep out of trouble,” said Mr Wild, who also attributed the recent offending to “a group he is involved with”.

Mr Wild added that Dowell had since referred himself to Addaction voluntarily to tackle alcohol misuse.

Dowell was fined £70, must pay £85 in prosecution costs, a £150 criminal court charge and a £20 victim surcharge. Magistrates decided to allow his conditional discharge to continue.
