Grantham doggy daycare appeals for pet pooches to become blood donors
A doggy daycare in Grantham is appealing for dogs to become blood donors.
A Dog's Life Doggy Day Care which opened on Hornsby Road, Grantham last year will be hosting The Pet Blood Bank UK for the first time on Wednesday.
They will be holding a blood drive donation session from their mobile unit at the centre on Hornsby Road, Grantham. Time slots begin at 1pm and the session finishes at 7pm.
Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring along their much loved canine companions to give blood.
Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the only charity that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practices across the UK.
Every unit of blood helps save up to four other lives, saving thousands of lives every year.
In order to be a donor, dogs need to meet specific criteria that ensures donor welfare is maintained and that the supply of blood is safe:
Donors must have a good temperament
Be aged between one and eight years’ old
Weigh more than 25kg
Should not have travelled abroad
Should be up to date with all their vaccinations
Should be fit and healthy
What happens at a donation session?
The appointment is split into three parts:
1. Pre donation health check with vet – this takes about 15 minutes
2. Donation – the donation takes place with the owner present and it takes between 5 –10 minutes to give approximately 450mls (just under a pint)
3. Post donation – the donor receives a drink of water and snack.
Each donor will alsoreceive a goody bag which has a toy, ‘I’m a Lifesaver’ bandana and some treats
If your pet meets criteria and you wish to help save lives, please contact the A Dog’s Life Dog Daycare team on 07450 867053 to sign up.
